There are numerous pieces of advice for first-time marathon runners to consider when prepping for their initial forays into this type of physical test. These three tips, in particular, are important to keep in mind as race day approaches.
Set reasonable expectations.
Even experienced marathon runners can have a difficult time estimating their race times. With all of the external factors that can impact your pace, specifically the weather, setting a time for finishing can be counterproductive. Especially for the first race, simply aim for a strong finish and mastery of the distance.
Spend time developing an adequate hydration regimen.
Striking a balance between keeping the body hydrated and filling the bladder (hence needing to use the bathroom) can be a delicate proposition. Learning how much water one’s body can take in at one time is something that should be worked out before race day.
Simulate marathon day.
Go through the exact routine (including gear, time of day, food intake, etc.) that you will undertake on marathon day. Completing a dress rehearsal in advance can illuminate any changes that need to be made or serve to confirm that preparation is on track.
